Universal Genève is a brand that most of us vintage watch enthusiasts alike feel very strong about. Universal Genève chronographs, such as the renowned Tri-Compax, Compax "Nina Rindt," and Polerouter, are extremely rare and frequently fetch high prices at auction. These watches had avant-garde features like quick-set dates and exotic materials like gold, platinum, and stainless steel that made them ahead of their time in terms of both design and functionality.

It is estimated that the Compax was first introduced in 1935 or so, and throughout its history, it has been referenced up to 185 times, frequently with several variations included in a single reference. Every decade saw a unique evolution in watch design, and this particular example from the 1960s has a sporty appearance and a style reminiscent of the era's Rolex Daytona, but more intricate and difficult to locate.

Collectors refer to the Tri-Compax examples from the late 1960s with the panda and reverse-panda dial motifs as the "Clapton" and "Evil Clapton," respectively, because Eric Clapton wore the former. Clapton bought his Tri-Compax as soon as it was released in 1967, not as a collector decades later. We were able to see Clapton sporting the UG in a 1967 photo with Jimi Hendrix.

More than just a moniker, this watch epitomizes Universal Genève, one of the greatest Swiss chronograph manufacturers, at its pinnacle of excellence. Following the success of the Compax line in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, UG hired Gérald Genta in 1954 to design the sturdy Polerouter three-hander. One could argue that the Polerouter design permanently altered UG and ushered in a period in which the brand's catalog was dominated by mid-century design. The brand's earlier designs were more conventional, but in the 1960s, UG started to offer some truly "in vogue" pieces; the best examples are the Compax references to "Nina Rindt" and "Clapton."

Especially the reference 881101/01, commonly referred to as the "Eric Clapton," as the musician regularly wore the watch during the 1960s. The watch features a white dial with black registers, and three complications (“Tri”): chronograph, moonphase and calendar (date, and apertures for day of the week and month).

Its chronograph functions, elegant white dial with contrasting black subdials, and sleek stainless steel case make it a coveted collector's item. The 881101 is powered by the Caliber 281, first produced in 1933/34 featuring specifications including a Breguet hairspring, 17 jewels, running at 18,000 vph (vibrations per hour), and a power reserve of 36 hours.

The 37mm case, which features twisted lugs, is in great condition. The watch is probably unpolished, with its original Universal Genève stamped acrylic glass, sharp edges and original nicely faded lume plots.

Universal Genève exemplifies the art of balanced proportions and the effective use of colors, from the contrasting sub-registers to the striking moonphase disc.

Although Universal Genève was well-known for producing intricate timepieces, the Tri-Compax was their greatest success in this field.

Absolutely mouth-watering!

  • The case is sharp, with light and honest signs of use. The engravings and hallmarks are perfectly visible on the sides and case-back.

The dial is in honest condition, with light aging on it, and spots only visible at close inspection. These dials are often corroded by humidity, this one remains very much legible.

The watch keeps very good time for a watch of its age.
