In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the British throne, and the United States conducted the first successful hydrogen bomb test. That same year also saw Dwight D. Eisenhower elected President of the United States, reshaping Cold War leadership.

In watchmaking, Omega continued to dominate observatory chronometer trials, reinforcing its position as the leading precision manufacture of the era. Building on the success of the 30 mm movements, Omega entered 1952 as the benchmark for chronometric performance among Swiss brands.

In the same year - 1952 - The Constellation was first produced by Omega. Similar to the Omega Centenary, the majority of the 2648 Constellation models were made in gold. The first production run of 2648 was manufactured in solid 18K gold, with only a handful of units made from stainless steel—such as this extremely rare item. (with caliber 352)

I believe that the pairing of a 2648 stainless steel case with a 352 movement was available for only a short time, resulting in only a few units being sold on the market. Though Seamaster 352 models are not common, this Constellation is even less so. Omega substituted case 2648 with case 2652 in the same year, as the latter was waterproof. The case 2652 was available until the year 1957.

In 1951, Omega became the first manufacture brand whose in-house movements matched Rolex’s reputation. That year, the 30 mm series set a new chronometric record, scoring 867.7 points—surpassing Omega’s own 1947 record of 834.9 points. All other leading Swiss brands competed in both years.
