The Rolex Sea-Dweller ref. 1665 “Great White” is one of those references where purpose-driven engineering meets a quietly iconic aesthetic. Introduced as the evolution of the Double Red Sea-Dweller, the Great White dispenses with the red text in favor of a more restrained, monochromatic dial—arguably making it the most tool-oriented and balanced iteration of the early Sea-Dweller lineage.
This example, bearing an 8 million serial, places its production firmly in 1983—toward the later years of the reference. It features a MK5 Tritium service dial, a configuration often seen on watches that remained within the Rolex service network, preserving functionality while maintaining period-correct charm. The dial displays the characteristic creamy tritium tone, paired with tritium hands that match well in appearance, offering a cohesive and honest look.
The 40mm stainless steel case retains the robust proportions that made the Sea-Dweller a professional’s instrument, originally developed for saturation diving and equipped with its signature helium escape valve. The domed plexiglass crystal adds warmth and vintage character, subtly distorting the dial at certain angles—an effect collectors continue to appreciate.
Fitted with a Rolex 93150 Oyster bracelet and a DT4 clasp code, the watch maintains its utilitarian identity throughout. On the wrist, it feels purposeful and grounded, with just the right amount of presence without excess.
A late Great White with honest details and strong character—an essential chapter in Rolex’s professional watchmaking history, equally suited for the collector and the enthusiast drawn to authentic tool watches.
