Although the iconic 222 was finally re-released by Vacheron Constantin, the Overseas line has firmly and proudly maintained Vacheron's position at the top of the luxury sports watch market.
Vacheron Constantin debuted the opulent, sporty Overseas in 1996. It's obvious that the 222 served as inspiration. However, the Overseas gave the high-end sports watch a distinctly contemporary makeover. Because of its more slab-like case, the Overseas was far more self-assured than the 222, which was elegant and fine.
An early implementation of the Overseas, first generation is this reference 42042. The watch has a great chunky brick-style bracelet and a 37 mm stainless steel case with a clever locking mechanism that guarantees you won't lose the watch while wearing it. In contrast, the caseback features an engraving of Amerigo Vespucci's three-masted ship, which inspired the name of the American continent.
You'll see why the blue-dialed model is the most popular and sought-after one if you wear it around your wrist. Because of these features the watch works well with streetwear or denim as well as a more formal look.
