Rolex may be synonymous with luxury and prestige today, but during the mid-20th century, its reputation was firmly forged as a manufacturer of uncompromising professional instruments. Purpose-built for adventurers, scientists, and explorers, each model served a dedicated task.
In 1971, Rolex expanded its tool watch repertoire with the introduction of the Explorer II, reference 1655. Tailored specifically for speleologists, polar researchers, and volcanologists operating in prolonged darkness or extreme conditions, the watch was engineered to provide an unmistakable orientation of day and night. This was achieved through a fixed 24-hour engraved bezel combined with a distinctive luminous 24-hour hand.
This particular example from 1972 represents the purest, most sought-after form of the reference: the legendary First Series "Straight Hand". Produced only during the initial phase of reference 1655, the central 24-hour hand features a straight, luminous wand design, lacking the small luminous dot ("lollipop") introduced in later executions. Paired with the correct first-generation dial architecture, this feature places the watch in the absolute top tier of rare vintage Rolex sports models.
The dial has aged with extraordinary character, displaying an attractive, vibrant "pumpkin" patina across both the dial indices and the straight hand. Framed by a thick, honest stainless steel case that retains sharp chamfers, strong bevels, and honest factory lines without excessive polishing, this piece is completed by its period-correct folded Rolex Oyster bracelet ref. 7836 with 280 end links and clasp stamped 3/71. Having undergone a comprehensive movement overhaul by our master watchmaker in October 2026, this First Series 1655 stands as a museum-grade collector's watch ready for daily appreciation.
