First introduced in 1948 to mark Omega’s centenary, the Seamaster collection was conceived to combine the waterproof reliability of wartime military wristwatches with the clean elegance required for everyday wear. By the late 1950s and early 1960s, the line reached a peak of mid-century design purity, characterized by well-proportioned steel cases, clean bezels, and highly legible dials that transitioned effortlessly from casual to formal attire.
The reference 14701 SC61 from 1961 represents this golden era of Omega dress-diver elegance. Housed in a refined stainless steel case measuring approximately 34.5 mm across, it features crisp faceted lugs and a solid screw-down caseback bearing the signature raised Omega Hippocampus emblem. The dial showcases a radiant sunray finish with applied faceted baton indices and an integrated date display at 3 o'clock, framed by an original Omega-signed winding crown.
Beating inside is the renowned Omega in-house Caliber 562. Belonging to Omega's revered 500-series automatic calibers—widely considered among the finest mass-produced mechanical tractor movements of the mid-20th century—it features 24 jewels, a swan-neck micrometer regulator, and a copper-finished movement bridge architecture. Freshly overhauled by our certified watchmaker, this movement offers outstanding mechanical reliability.
Completing this timepiece is a stainless steel Forstner Komfit mesh bracelet, offering exceptional wrist comfort and a distinctive period-correct aesthetic made famous by mid-century astronauts and collectors alike.
