A moon phase is an age-old complication, perhaps one of the least practical for modern life, yet it still holds a special place in the hearts of collectors for reasons Ming can't fully grasp, despite owning several. A date feature is at least a bit more functional. Ming chose to combine the two and embrace a touch of old-school whimsy by opting for a manual wind movement—once again providing enthusiasts with more opportunities to engage with their watch.

Of course, being Ming, the team scrutinized both the moon and date to devise a smoother presentation than the typical holes-in-a-dial style that better suits their design language. The continued use of multi-layered sapphire dials provided a solution: the apertures for the date and moon are located in the lower layer dial, which is metal, textured, and features a midnight blue to black gradient reminiscent of the night sky. Above this, a seamless sapphire dial carries the hour indices (laser etched and filled with HyCeram) and a central mask for the moon, mirroring the peripheral ring forms. A full moon thus creates a complete luminous ring, with partial phases represented as segments. The date window maintains symmetry at 6 o’clock and is as subtle as possible, with a background color matched to the dial and the usual font in light grey.

The result, visible in the accompanying images, showcases one of the most dynamic dials Ming has ever created: it transitions completely from a seamless silver mirror to a solid blue-black, displaying the moon and date. This change is gradual, and most of the time, the watch reveals a bit of both: a calm, reflective serenity above and significantly more visual texture below. Naturally, there is also an abundance of luminous material.

MING 37.05 Moonphase, a 316L stainless steel measuring 38mm diameter, 11.9mm thickness, powered by a Swiss-made Sellita SW280-1 automatic movement with a frequency of 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz). The watch has a power reserve of approximately 38 hours, featuring 26 jewels and high-SPECS decoration including Côtes de Genève and Perlage finishing. The moon-phase display is driven by a separate gear train from the timekeeping mechanism, ensuring that the accuracy of the watch is not affected by the complication. The deep shade of blue dial has applied hour markers and hands that have been treated with Super-LumiNova for enhanced legibility in low light conditions. The moon phase disk is made of metal and has been laser-etched with a high-precision representation of the lunar cycle and rotates once every 29.5 days, adjusted via a corrector pusher located on the side of the 38mm stainless steel case featuring a sapphire crystal on both the front and back, with an anti-reflective coating on the front and water-resistant to 50 meters (5 ATM). fitted to a blue leather strap with a 3rd generation keeperless ‘flying blade’ stainless steel buckle, with micro adjustment.
