In the early 20th century, Louis Cartier introduced a bold new geometric aesthetic to the company his grandfather had founded just decades earlier. One of the clearest expressions of this design shift is the Santos Octagon.
The original Cartier Santos, created in 1904 for Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont, marked a significant departure from the round, fluid designs of earlier pocket watches and wristwatches. With its square case and visible screws on the bezel, the Santos embraced a strong, utilitarian look that would later influence legendary designer Gérald Genta in his creation of the Royal Oak nearly 70 years later.
In the 1990s, Cartier reinterpreted the Santos by replacing its signature square case with an octagonal one, complete with a matching bezel—possibly a subtle nod to the Royal Oak’s iconic shape. While most Santos Octagon models were produced in a two-tone finish, this particular example is crafted entirely from stainless steel.
Despite its 30mm case width (excluding the crown), the watch wears larger on the wrist thanks to its extending lugs and integrated bracelet, making it a versatile choice for many men. This reference 2965 stands out as both an accessible and collectible entry in the Santos Octagon line.
The signature 'screwed' Santos bracelet, with its sleek rectangular links, doubles as an elegant piece of jewelry. It comfortably fits wrists up to 18.5 cm. One of our favorite details is the deeply engraved interlocking “C” Cartier logo on the bracelet clasp—a subtle yet refined finishing touch.
