In 2022, Cartier released three stunning Santos-Dumont models in rose gold with a cream dial, platinum with a burgundy dial, and stainless steel with a black dial. These watches were highly sought after and remain elusive, as they still aren’t listed on Cartier’s official website. The rose gold edition was limited to just 250 pieces, while the platinum version was even rarer, with only 150 produced. Although the black stainless steel model wasn’t limited to a specific number, it’s likely that production quantities were kept low.
The Santos-Dumont we’re looking at today features a fully stainless steel case with a width of 31.4mm, a thickness of 7.3mm, and a lug-to-lug measurement of 43.5mm. Cartier refers to this as the large size, but it’s far from a bulky watch. Despite its modest dimensions, it certainly offers a noticeable wrist presence. A big part of what makes it so striking is that sleek black lacquer finish applied over the case and bezel.
The black lacquer adds another layer of refinement to the already brilliant design of the Santos. What’s key here is that the lacquer doesn’t cover the sharp bevels of the case, which allows the unique, attractive shape of the Santos to really shine through. The glossy black dial features engraved squares that create a subtle three-dimensional effect, adding depth and texture. On top of that, the iconic applied Roman numerals sit proudly, perfectly complementing the sleek sword hands. All of this is framed by a printed railroad minute track, completing the elegant and cohesive design.
Striking in person!

So, what’s the story behind this watch? The Cartier Santos traces its origins back to the early 20th century when Louis Cartier designed it for his friend, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. It’s recognized as one of the very first wristwatches ever made. What set it apart at the time was its distinctive square case, a bold departure from the more common round designs of that era.
Today, Cartier continues to honor this legacy with an extensive Santos collection. Within this lineup, the Santos-Dumont stands out as the more refined and elegant option, staying true to its sophisticated roots.
