This Universal Genève is a very nice chronograph with the reference 22209.
The watch is now almost 75 years old. This can of course be seen on the dial, which has developed an attractive patina over time. The dial has three totalisers (running seconds, stop minute and stop hour), a tachymeter scale and Arabic numerals.
Apart from the glass and the strap, the watch should be in its original condition, and the luminous material (which probably contains radium) also appears to be from the time. I find the case diameter of 34mm particularly attractive.
Ticking reliably inside the watch is the UG281 column wheel chronograph movement with 17 jewels. The movement was recently overhauled and works perfectly so far.
Incidentally, the UG movement was also used in the identical version from Girard Perregaux. Most of these watches currently on offer are those from GP.
The engraving ‘Charles A. Behrens’ can be found on the back cover of the watch. According to research, this must be a gentleman who lived in Florida and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1946. This would also be a good chronological fit. There is also a small hand-scored ‘engraving’ on the bottom lid with the combination ‘Be54’. I interpret this to mean that the watch may have changed hands in 1954. Before the watch was finally brought back to Europe, it was offered by a dealer in Miami.
