The Constellation is one of the timeless collections that Omega has consistently produced for decades, and the company's watch catalog is among the most varied of any Swiss watch manufacturer. In 1952, Omega launched the first Constellation, which remains a key component of the contemporary brand.
The Constellation of Today was created about 1963 and has a few traits that would later come to define the collection. Naturally, the dial features an affixed star emblem in addition to the Constellation branding. Eight stars on the caseback depict the Geneva Observatory, which stand in for the eight observatory chronometer contests Omega won during the 20th century. This Constellation was a chronometer-rated watch, as you might anticipate; it states so exactly.
Omega's response to what a technically advanced dress wristwatch should look like was the Constellation. Hour markers with tritium pips have been used in this example to improve legibility and provide depth to the overall design. This flat dial has a gentle curvature at the corners instead of the "pie-pan" shape that Constellations is known for. It also has a texturing that makes the watch feel entirely different on the wrist than other watches we've seen.
At first glance, the case appears straightforward, yet the long, extended lugs have distinctive geometric faceted edges that add interest to the design from all angles. Because of the lugs' characteristic kinked appearance, collectors have come to refer to this style as "dog-leg" over the years. Over the years, Omega used a few different case manufacturers. In the 1960s, "HF" and "CB," as you may have heard, were trusted to create Speedmaster cases. This Constellation is distinguished by "SGR," the third-largest Omega casemaker at the time, who was given numerous "dog-leg" Omega cases to handle.
The "dog-leg" lugs have sharp facets and are in excellent shape. This type of watch serves as a reminder of the traditional, three-handed Constellation's potential. To keep things basic and timeless, we wore this one with our used grey leather watchband.
